Protection Island sits in Nanaimo Harbour, a short ferry ride from the city and a world apart.
Its forests and shorelines, quiet roads and small beaches are shared by the people who live here, by herons and seals and arbutus trees, and by everyone who comes across on the ferry. The Foundation is being established to look after the island and its community: the land and the water, the neighbours who need a hand, the parks and trails everyone uses, and the knowledge of how to live well on a coastal island.
What the Foundation is for
-
Shoreline and forest
Conserving and restoring the island's ecosystems, wildlife habitat and shorelines, controlling invasive species, and managing wildfire fuel with care for the land.
-
Neighbours
Helping older residents and residents with disabilities stay well on the island, with accessible transport, assistive devices, help with daily living, and home accessibility changes.
-
Parks and trails
Establishing, improving and maintaining public parks, trails and open spaces for everyone to use.
-
Learning
Workshops, courses and training on coastal erosion, shoreline stewardship, invasive species and the conservation of coastal ecosystems.
Protection Island Community Foundation is being formed in 2026 as a British Columbia society. This page will grow as the Foundation does.
